A ‘Treemendous’ treat is in store…
We’ve had great fun decorating North Cottage Cromer for our Christmas guests this year. A festive soundtrack put us in a celebratory mood while we were hanging baubles, laying tinsel, making wreaths and bringing in cut holly, and berries from the garden. The house is officially ready for the holidays!

North Cottage Cromer
This year we’ve gone BIG and decorated no fewer than three trees! Because the sprawling Garden Room is so large – at 70 metres square, it demands an 8-foot centrepiece!
We’ve actually decorated three trees in total:
- The Garden Room – Traditional Red and White (8ft)
- The Dining Room – Elegant Ochre and Gold (6’6″)
- The Entrance Hall – Modern Black and White (5′)
Which tree is your favourite – are you a traditionalist or a modernist?

In case you’re wondering why we don’t use real trees, it’s because we can’t bring ourselves to cut down a real tree for a few weeks of life indoors, even if they’ve been grown especially for the purpose. High quality artificial trees also help us meet our sustainable travel goals, these trees won’t be travelling anywhere except back to the garage…
The ultimate Christmas hack – renting vs. hosting
After spending almost two days decorating the house we’ve realised several other great benefits to renting a house for Christmas.
- No hauling Christmas trees from the loft or filling the car with pine needles.
- No ‘dead’ fairy lights to contend with.
- No vacuuming up glitter for six months.
What’s more you don’t need to pack it all away after the holidays – just wave goodbye and hand back the keys! What could be better?

Actually there are lots of benefits to renting a house for Christmas so the whole family can celebrate together. North Cottage Cromer (check availability) with six bedrooms and four reception rooms is definitely large enough for most extended family gatherings. The cottage boasts a seaside location with the end of the pier Christmas show and beach walks beckoning for walking off the festive excess on Cromer beach. Indoors there’s a log burner to cosy up beside afterwards. When you’re not busy snuggling up by the log burner there are plenty of things to do in North Norfolk in December. This large house also has another great feature – a modern bright red, shiny, three-oven gas AGA, perfect for festive roasting and baking.
The Secret to a Perfect Roast Turkey
Our guests this year have bought their own professional chef with them (their son-in-law!) How perfect is that? Even he was sceptical of our shiny red 3-oven AGA. But as an ‘AGA veteran’ Andrea was quick to answer his totally legitimate question; ‘Yes, but will it really make any difference to using your regular electric oven over there?’ She was able to confidently confirm it truly does.

Why Does Turkey Roast Better in an AGA?
With an AGA the meat remains more moist than an electric oven. Why? Because the AGA roasts with radiant heat from its cast iron surfaces, while conventional ovens use a fan to circulate hot air. Circulating air dries out the breast meat before the leg meat is cooked. The AGA cooks the entire roast evenly. You really don’t need to be a chef, anyone can reproduce this trick with the AGA guide.
